WLAN on Acer TravelMate 4310 with Ubuntu 9.10

Now I am using the buildin driver in Ubuntu 9.10 called ath5k for my wireless netcard (chipset AR5007). The madwifi driver still is a better choice but it is a bit annoying to rebuild and reinstall the madwifi driver after every kernel update.
I found that the ath5k driver has a serious problem: If your AP is set to use channels 1-4 then the driver cannot connect to the wireless network. It keeps prompting for the network key.
When I configure the AP to use channels 5-13 then there is no problem at all.
This problem I have found when using different AP’s from Zyxel, Netgear and Linksys – so my conclusion is that it must be a driver error.
You can find a similar description on ThinkPad adapters here. Notice that they cannot use channels 7-13.

WLAN on Acer TravelMate 4310 with Ubuntu 9.04

Finally I have resolved the ever returning issue with WLAN support on my Acer Travelmate 4310.
The madwifi driver supports my chip (AR5007) and I have no longer any problems with connecting to Wireless networks.
The solution can be found here.
It is not the most user friendly way of getting Wireless to work but it is a way! Just follow the instructions as they are printed.
Oh – remember to reinstall the madwifi driver each time you upgrade the kernel. So remember to keep the driver handy on your laptop.

Optimize Firefox 3

I have experienced that Firefox 3 can be very slow during startup and when scrolling. It seams that these problems can be partially fixed.
Here are my favorite tweaks:
In the address bar type about:config and hit enter
Change the following:
network.dns.disableIPv6 false to true
network.http.max-connections 30 to 96
network.http.max-connections-per-server 15 to 32
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server 6 to 8
network.http.pipelining false to true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests 4 to 8
network.http.proxy.pipelining false to true

Acer TravelMate 4310 WLAN and Ubuntu 9.04

I have the following problem:
My Wifi works without problems under kernel 2.6.28-11 but it fails under kernel 2.6.28-13. I’m using the ath_pci driver.
Apparently there has been a change in the ath_pci wifi driver in kernel 2.6.28-13 that my hardware do not agree with.
Some people reports that the ath5k driver should be working but I can’t make it work on my machine.
By the way – I’m using Wicd as my wireless network manager without problems under kernel 2.6.28-11 in Gnome and KDE.
My advice for the moment is to stick with the 2.6.28-11 kernel to avoid wifi problems.

Ubuntu 9.04 sound problem fixed

I have a brand new installation of Ubuntu 9.04 (with KDE4 as my default UI) on my desktop PC.
My problem was no sound in Youtube.com and in the game Openarena. However the login sound in Ubuntu played loud and clear.
I located the problem to be related to my ATI HD 2400 PCI-E graphics card. Alsa had this configured as my primary sound card and not my onboard VIA sound card.
This is how I solved it:
Step 1:
Go to a terminal and write:
aplay -l
The output will be something like this:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: V8237 [VIA 8237], device 0: VIA 8237 [VIA 8237]
Subdevices: 4/4
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
Subdevice #2: subdevice #2
Subdevice #3: subdevice #3
card 1: V8237 [VIA 8237], device 1: VIA 8237 [VIA 8237]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
In this output I can see my VIA sound card as Card 1, Device 0
Step 2:
Then I edited a file called asound.conf located in /etc (the file was not there so I created it)
sudo kate /etc/asound.conf
and put in the following configuration:
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
device 0
}
save the file
Step 3:
restart ubuntu.
Voila! Sound was playing everywhere.
